I am so sorry for your loss. When I was younger I learned a poem that Lord Byron had written as an epithaph for his dog. I hope you find comfort in it:
"When some proud son of man returns to earth, Unknown by glory, but upheld by birth, The sculptor’s art exhausts the pomp of woe, And stories urns record that rests below. When all is done, upon the tomb is seen, Not what he was, but what he should have been. But the poor dog, in life the firmest friend, The first to welcome, foremost to defend, Whose honest heart is still his master’s own, Who labors, fights, lives, breathes for him alone, Unhonored falls, unnoticed all his worth, Denied in heaven the soul he held on earth – While man, vain insect! hopes to be forgiven, And claims himself a sole exclusive heaven.
Oh man! thou feeble tenant of an hour, Debased by slavery, or corrupt by power – Who knows thee well must quit thee with disgust, Degraded mass of animated dust! Thy love is lust, thy friendship all a cheat, Thy smiles hypocrisy, thy words deceit! By nature vile, ennoble but by name, Each kindred brute might bid thee blush for shame. Ye, who perchance behold this simple urn, Pass on – it honors none you wish to mourn. To mark a friend’s remains these stones arise; I never knew but one – and here he lies."
I'm sorry for your loss, Jona. Here's what I would do, first chance: as a family, go someplace (the park, the beach) that Ryker loved, and have everyone say a little something about him. Have a good cry.
Oh Jona - I'm so sorry. I'd like to think of Ryker and Phyllis together running on a beach somewhere - unencumbered by arthritis and bad hearts and bad kidneys.
I'm so sorry. It's been 2 years since we had to put Sam down and I still remember how hard it was to do; but know it was the right thing to do for him.
Oh, Jona, I am so sorry. My heart is hurting for your loss. Take your time to mourn your loss. Remember him fondly. The love of a dog is unconditional...we could all learn something from a dog.
I am sorry to hear of your loss. It is incredible the love we have for our pets, and how hard it is when they leave us. Think of all the lovely fun things you shared with him. Know that he is now in a pain-free place. Take it easy, take your time, take care, Meow
